March at the club

Quiet night, only around 8 turned up, lots of the lads have exams and man flu seems to have knocked out many of us as well.

One of the newer lads played in this game and guess what at long last the empire won.

My Bretonnians got a show, first in oh 2 years or so.

Vs the Skaven of Clan plumbium, there are some really nice old school models in the lot. Sadly they did the usual Skaven thing and ran away to fight another day.

Yep my two trebuchets on turn 1 both misfired. Argh, yet the roll just left them unable to fire this turn.

As you can tell this is why the empire won.

I bought my Chain of Command along for a couple to the guys to use whilst I snotted the Skaven, it was great to see some Russians against the British Paratroops, must have been 1946. Seems the guys are picking up the rules pretty fast.

Another view of the same game.

That's all for now folks.

RIP Terry Pratchett

Sad to hear that Terry Pratchett has passed away. I had the chance to get a book autographed by him oh close to 15+ years ago. Supposedly later in the day he pulled out a cocktail shaker and made himself a G&T with dry ice. Well I think I will have one in his honour this afternoon after work. Yep one author I will miss.

Chain of Command First run at the club, or the blind leading the blind

Club roll out was good as we had 8 roleplayers that ended up playing a couple of games of Magic The Gathering. 3 gamers doing the Wings of Glory WWI thing, one painter and us four trying out Chain of Command.

I have been very keen to give this game a run at the club. A couple of convention demo games that I played in convinced me that we could have fun with this. So one of the club members a couple of weeks ago said lets give it a try. Woo hoo, only problem was that I am not really all that, shall we say, comfortable with the rules yet. Demo and Solo games not withstanding I had not really played many games. Well not only did I have an opponent but 1 more member and a new blood stepped up to the mark as well.

1 platoon of Grenadiers, an Sdkfz 222 and a Panzer IV for the Germans.
1 platoon of British infantry, a Daimler and a Sherman for the Allies.

Even enough and though we did not play a scenario from the book the feel of the game seemed fairly accurate.

Patrol Phase about to begin, the game within a game seemed to keep us entertained.

The British are in the ruins near the wheat fields and are taking somewhat of a pounding, yes they get to dish out a bit of pain back to the Germans but to be honest we really needed to go tactical in the ruins as we were using them as light rather than heavy cover. Note the little squares for shock, I think I shall put differing numbers on the, rather than stack them.

View from the right flank of the Germans. Yes that is another MG 34 enfilading the Brits in the ruins. Note the size of the Jump off points, yep 15mm minis. Oh until I make some fancy ones Jump off points and patrol makers and the chain of command board are mounted on foam core. Light easy to transport and wont blow off the table easily.

View from the British side. As you can see a huge amount of shock on the "ruined" British Infantry but not many kills. The little PIAT took a pot shot at the 222 early in the game with limited success but it did force it to move away with a dead gunner. About 10 minutes later a German squad pops up to the right of the hedges near the hapless Brits, opens fire, more shock and then throws itself into the maelstrom of hand to hand and sure enough the Brits crumble to a man. Melee is brutal and if you don't pin and reduce the numbers of defenders the attackers can come off second best when the bayonets come out, noted by the German commanders a couple of phases earlier.

As the shock started to mount both commanders brought on their senior commanders to rally a little shock off. Now this sounds sensible but it meant that the Germans tried 4 times to bring on the PanzerIV and I tried once with the Daimler but to no avail, I am actually glad that the IV did not come on as we would have been packing up pretty early.

Hard to make out from the blurry foreground but the 222 is concealing a Panzershreck armed fire team that leaps out from cover to smash the Sherman in two shots. Nice work for the little pair of troopers. Gaining 2 phases in a row with the double six throws can be real handy when you neatly place your Senior commander and keep rolling 4s to get him to make his three activations.

The British lost out this time but the better news was that my opponents want to give this game another run but use one of the scenarios with a defender somewhat limited against a stronger attacker. Happy days when the Blind lead the Blind and they want to come back for more.

First Run with the new time slot

In Australia at the moment TV stations are advertising when their programs are running and without fail it is never at the advertised time, so you stick around and wait for the show to start or you move on. Well the club has had to change times and rather than move on it would seem some of the Old Guard have returned Huzzah as they would say.

So what happened on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, Pathfinder and the inevitable rolling up of characters, an X-Wing game, Saga 4 ways, and 40K Tau vs Dark Angels sort of.

on with the show
2 hours to roll up characters and then  a small intro scenario

Teaching a Noob the fine art of using a battle board, notice the move to the biscuit bowl, hmmmmmm

Riptide nice model shoots a long long distance.

The Tau that brought me down

David vs Goliath in X-Wing needless to say the Rebel scum won again.

My Dark Angel successor chapter got to keep the objective but at the end of the game were down to around 10 men from 1250 points ouch, oh I lost.

Infinity tart ups, actually Haqislam that was nicely painted and all I rally needed was to do a wash and finish the bases.

More of the same

My cheap and cheerful Infinity terrain is coming along. Foam core buildings with glue on texture packs, the Mototronica set from Operation Icestorm and a highly overexposed PlastCraft Games building.

For those interested in these fantastic and I really mean fantastic Foam Core templates and texture packs try this site http://infinitytheforums.com/forum/index.php?/topic/22023-foam-core-terrain-template/page-2 all credit to Tony as this is what is needed to get you into the game quickly and cheaply.

Club meeting times have changed.

Due to the needs of the Youth Group at the church our club will now meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month and the kids day will also stop on Saturdays for the time being whilst I drum up more dice throwing clever kids from my school. Please come along and enjoy the games and friendship on the Tuesday nights, and of course if you would like to be a part of the Church Youth group you will also be more than welcome on the Fridays.

CanCon 2015 not really a report

Well over the Australia day long weekend I zoomed off to Canberra for the annual pilgrimage. This time though I decided to do some painting and modelling classes rather than a competition or a demo game. I don’t know why I just did not get inspired by anything on offer and that is no slur on the brilliant games on offer.

Infinity table pro built

Sword and Shield a new game that I am keen to see played

Infinity table

Infinity table again

Infinity table what can be done with the insides of an aluminium case

Infinity table

Infinity table and aquarium plants

Infinity table

One of the new mats....expensive $90.00 or so?? for Infinity

I ended up doing a fantasy tower build with Owen Top of Terrain for Hippos fame, nice chap, great terrain and I even picked up a genuine Hippo Topiary from his previous terrain classes. I’ll show this one off when I have it on a board with minis.
Owen's tower, mine is a mere shadow but I was happy.
Tried to learn how to paint faces with Meg Maples, great teacher dodgy student but with everything it takes effort.
Meg's work on faces

More of Meg's work not mine.............I wonder why I don't show my efforts?
I also did some speed painting tutorials with Luke from The Sound of Machines miniature painting service and Steve King from????? Tank weathering and Zenithal highlighting and using either oil wash shades or glaze/wash painting techniques were excellent ways to get good looking minis on the table in a more reasonable time period than what I am used to doing so much to be emulated here.
Luke's early effort
The technique pushed further
More gunk than you can poke a stick at

Lots of track gunk, but you should have seen the final product a day or so later wow. Now I have to do this for my 15mm tanks.

Lots to buy at CanCon but I did not go berserk, but I did pick up an assortment of Infinity second hand, the new Perry Agincourt boxed set and a nice Arnhem bridge from Eureka minis.
Had a great time and will be back next year. What to play what to paint what to do???
Nice skink from the painting competition

I only dream of this standard

These successor really caught my eye
Speed painting Competition with a twist

First Post for the new year ECW Cuirassiers

Well we have had two meetings at the club with X-wing and Warhammer Fantasy being played with much merriment using x-wing and watching the Rebels win 3 out of 4 games. Got to send Darth Vader in methinks.

My usual January is spent painting as I chill out before the new school year starts and to build up a little painted stuff to sell at CanCon, the big annual pilgrimage I undertake each year. With fantastic paint jobs from China, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Thailand my days of making a little money on commission painting are over so instead I just find old mini projects I am unlikely to do and paint a couple of units to sell at the second hand stall. So behold Warlord Games ECW Cuirassiers.
I am now looking forward to CanCon and this year instead of participation games I am spending my limited budget on doing a few painting classes and even a terrain building class with Owen from Terrain For Hippos fame. Lets hope I get a little time to take a few snap shots.

Merry Christmas

I wish you all, club members and bloggers that glance across this digital page, a safe and blessed Christmas  and New Year.

Going to have to think about growing the club a little more as many of the lads have moved on as they have grown up.

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Landwaster DBA 2.2 min tournament and a game of Green Jackets (skirmish napoleonic in 28mm)

I had the privilege to cram 6 games of DBA in on last Sunday and had a ball. DBA has always held a strong pull on me and though a lot of people shudder at the thought of the game I find that my opponents take it seriously enough but not so much so that they stress themselves and you out. I just like the game and well playing with toy soldiers is my hobby. Landwaster has been held in Canberra a few times before by DBA Fanaticus member McBeth better known as David. He runs a great little competition dragging people from quite far afield 10+ hour drive away and so on. Well I did not place but did pick up a small award for killing lots of elements and drove the 3 hours home with a big smile. Typically I only took the odd photo or two and don't have much to show for my efforts but I did face some great looking armies.

Game 2 or 3? My Timurid army vs a Scottish army

Achaean Greeks beautifully painted by Mick from Micks metal models

The camp/baggage element, now this was clever

Club night saw a small game of Space Hulk and Green Jackets and a few lads Roleplaying
My newly minted Victrix Austrians ready to pounce on the British

Clambering up the objective hill

My British enemy blooded for the first time as well. It is nice to see my minis making it onto the table painted. When you take photos you should really look at product placement to earn you a little cash on the side or just bother to have a look at what is also in the photo you dummy!

The Brits clumped close enough that with a single canon I could have won the game in a single turn.

Finger of doom proving that Space Hulk is still a great evenings entertainment
